Finding the right therapist often starts with a simple question: does this person actually work with what I’m dealing with? At Zurita and Associates, we work with a range of concerns—some more commonly known, others less openly discussed—all through a culturally informed, integrative lens shaped by over 30 years of experience. Here’s an overview of what we treat and how we approach each area.
ADHD
Adult ADHD is frequently misunderstood or missed entirely, especially in people who were never diagnosed as children. It often shows up as chronic disorganization, difficulty starting or finishing tasks, forgetfulness, time blindness, and emotional reactions that feel bigger than the moment calls for. ADHD doesn’t just affect work and productivity—it shapes relationships, self-esteem, and daily life in ways that are easy to misattribute to stress or personality.
Our approach looks beyond a symptom checklist to understand how ADHD is actually playing out in your life—at work, in relationships, and in how you see yourself—and builds practical strategies alongside that understanding.
Depression
Depression is more than persistent sadness. It can show up as low energy, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, irritability, or a general sense of numbness or hopelessness. For some, it’s obvious; for others, it’s something they’ve learned to function around for so long that it starts to feel normal.
We work with depression by looking at the full picture—biological, relational, and situational factors—rather than treating it as a single, isolated issue to be managed in a vacuum.
Anxiety
Anxiety often centers on excessive, hard-to-control worry, but it also shows up physically—racing heart, tight chest, muscle tension—and behaviorally, through avoidance, irritability, or a constant need for reassurance. Left unaddressed, anxiety can quietly shape decisions, relationships, and day-to-day comfort in ways that build up gradually.
Therapy for anxiety focuses on understanding its roots, building practical tools to manage it in the moment, and addressing the underlying patterns that keep it running in the background.
Anger Management
Anger becomes a concern not because the emotion itself is a problem, but when it starts affecting relationships, work, or how you feel about yourself—showing up as disproportionate reactions, frequent irritability, or conflict cycles that keep repeating. Anger is often connected to other underlying factors, including stress, anxiety, or unresolved past experiences.
Rather than focusing only on suppressing anger, we work on understanding what’s driving it and building healthier ways to recognize and respond to it before it escalates.
Premarital Counseling
Premarital counseling isn’t about identifying problems in a relationship—it’s about building a strong foundation before you need one. Many couples come in wanting to talk through communication styles, expectations around finances and family, conflict resolution, and the differences that naturally exist between two people building a life together.
This work helps couples enter marriage with a clearer, more honest understanding of each other, and with tools already in place for navigating disagreement in a healthy way, before those patterns are tested by day-to-day life.
LGBTQ+ Issues
Finding a therapist who is genuinely affirming—not just accepting in theory, but experienced in the real, specific challenges LGBTQ+ individuals and couples navigate—can be difficult, particularly in New Mexico’s smaller communities. Concerns in this space can include identity exploration, coming out, navigating family relationships, discrimination and minority stress, and relationship dynamics specific to LGBTQ+ couples, including non-monogamous and kink-allied relationships.
We provide affirming, culturally informed support for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, with an understanding that these experiences don’t exist separately from the rest of a person’s life, culture, and relationships—they’re woven into all of it.
Why an Integrative Approach Matters
These concerns rarely show up in isolation. Anxiety and depression frequently overlap. ADHD often contributes to anger and relationship conflict. Premarital counseling can surface anxiety patterns a couple hasn’t fully named yet. Rather than treating each concern as a separate, disconnected issue, we look at the whole person and the relationships and context around them—because that’s usually where the clearest path forward becomes visible.
Getting Started
At Zurita and Associates, all of these areas are supported through bilingual (Spanish/English) telehealth, making care accessible no matter where you’re located in New Mexico. With over 30 years of experience, Ruben Zurita brings a culturally informed, integrative approach to each of these concerns, whether you’re seeking individual therapy or working through something as a couple.
We accept a range of insurance plans (Aetna, BlueCross/BlueShield, Carelon, and Cigna) as well as private-pay options. If you’re not sure whether what you’re dealing with fits into one of these areas—or fits into more than one—a free 15-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to talk it through and see if we’re a good fit.
